Physics 331: Classical Mechanics

Through even the first year of a graduate program, a physics education is like a helix - cycling through the same subject areas, but each time at a higher level, each time you gain greater insight and more powerful tools, and each time you finally feel like you’ve mastered the previous level. This time around, you’ll come to master applying Newton’s laws to more complex and realistic problems and you’ll meet some new tools like calculus of variations and the alternative Lagrangian mechanics. After courses in Electricity and Magnetism, Thermodynamics, and Quantum Mechanics, the conceptual familiarity of Classical Mechanics should be refreshing, and the opportunity for mastery should be invigorating.  At the same time, the elevated level should prove challenging.  So enjoy the classics.
